Big Mohawk

November 20, 2017:
Capt. Chris Hueth oft Big Mohawk III said striper fishing was outstanding on his early week trips with all his trips limiting out with keepers, some slot fish and plenty of bass caught and released. Chris said Thursday's tog opener enjoyed a good bite of whitechins; however, Friday's fishing was slower as conditions started to deteriorate. Hopefully conditions will bounce back this week, he said.

Capt. Chris Hueth of the Mohawk III said the boat enjoyed a good day of jumbo porgies and some nice sea bass. Chris told me a lot of anglers did very, very well and everyone went home with a cooler. The boat switched to stripers and simply hammered bass to 42-pounds while snagging and dropping bunker. Chris said he will be fishing stripers the first three days this week, limiting the boat to 17 anglers and leaving the dock at 5:15 a.m. The boat will switch over to blackfishing on the 16th running daily for tog for the rest of the season as long as the weather and fishing holds.

The Big Mohawk III started off the week on Wednesday with a good bottom fishing trip dominated by sea bass, porgies and a few tog. On Thursday the fishing continue to be very good for porgies and sea bass, while Friday's trip continued the good fishing for sea bass and porgies. Capt. Chris Hueth said weekend catches were equally as good and many anglers who fished said they were looking forward to the blackfishing opening back up later this month.

"We had to move around a lot on Monday but saw some limits of sea bass and some nice porgies to start the week off," said Capt. Chris Hueth of the Big Mohawk III. The boat skipped Tuesday because of the weather, but Wednesday's trip, while getting off to a rough start, ended up with a decent pick of sea bass and big porgies. On Thursday fishing was very good with some limits of sea bass and porgies being decked, while Friday's trip enjoyed a good bite of nice size sea bass and porgies as did Saturday's trip. Chris asked me to remind fishermen that the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council meets this coming Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Library in Galloway Township. Changes in the sea bass season will be discussed at the meeting so if you are a bottom fishing it's in your best interest to attend the meeting and have your vice heard.

Excellent bottom fishing started the week off aboard the Big Mohawk II. The boat did not sail on Tuesday because of the weather, while Wednesday's trip saw picky porgy fishing and some nice blackfish as the seas were still roiled from the rough water on Tuesday. Capt. Chris Hueth said the fishing bounced back on Thursday with good amounts of nice size porgies and tog coming over the rails. Sunday's trip hammered the sea bass and plenty of porgies. Chris said it was nice to see some sea bass make the filleting board and anglers now have a mix of sea bass, porgies and tog to put in the freezer.
