JUNE IS TOURNAMENT TIME IN NEW YORK

From surf to offshore, the sixth month plays host to numerous tournaments around the Island.

JUNE IS TOURNAMENT TIME IN NEW YORK
The Manhattan Cup is more than just a tournament, it’s a totally unique experience.

If you enjoy sprinkling in a little competition with your fishing, June is your month and it doesn’t matter if your fishing is limited to the surf or your playground is the distant blue water. Striped bass, fluke, bluefish and sharks will be the targets this month, and there is still plenty of time to get in on the action. Here is a rundown of when and where it is all happening.

June 1-2: LIBBA Catch & Release Surf Fishing Contest; Takes place at Gilgo Beach for striped bass and bluefish. Open to LIBBA members in good standing. Fishing from 8 a.m. June 1 through noon on June 2. BBQ and awards ceremony on the beach at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. For rules go to www.libba.com. Prizes for three largest striped bass and bluefish. June 2: Suffolk Marine Anglers 10th Annual Striped Bass Tournament; Based at Babylon Village Dock. Shotgun start 6 a.m. from Village Dock. Boundaries from Moriches Inlet to East Rockaway (Debs) Inlet. Weigh-in by 3:30 p.m. Nearly $20,000 dollars in prize money in 2018. Benefits Hospice Care Network. Also catch and release category, slot fish category, Calcutta bluefish category and a mystery fish. Captains Meeting at Miller’s Ale House in Deer Park on Thursday, May 30th at 7:30 p.m. with thousands of dollars in prizes raffled off. June 7: Manhattan Cup Charity Striped Bass Tournament; Benefits Wounded Warriors and fisheries conservation. Meet celebrity anglers, gourmet breakfast-lunch-dinner featuring celebrity chefs. Light tackle and fly fishing divisions. Everyone gets a fantastic goodie bag. Fishing out of Liberty Landing Marina. June 8: 6th Annual Point Lookout Shark Tournament; Proceeds benefitting Waterfront Warriors. Entry fee $350 per boat. Prizes for first, second and third place. Mako and threshers only. Six Calcutta levels: $100, $300, $500, $1,000, $1,500, and $500 Mako Madness. Bimini start at 6 a.m. Weigh-in at Ted’s Fishing Station by 6 p.m. Weather date Sunday, June 9. June 13-15: 33rd Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament; Captain’s meeting and beer bust Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. Fishing on Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Awards ceremony and open buffet with live entertainment Saturday at 7:30 p.m. $60,000 in cash prizes and trophies with $30,000 for heaviest shark. Cash prizes for Heaviest Shark of the Day, three Heaviest Makos, three heaviest blues and three Heaviest Other Species. Entry fee $1,250 per boat. June 15: 47th Annual Freeport Hudson Anglers Shark Tournament; Over $250,000 in cash and prizes awarded in previous years. Entry fee $300 per prior to June 1 - $350 after June 1. Mandatory captain’s meeting 7 p.m. Friday, June 14 at Town of Hempstead Guy Lombardo Marina in Freeport. Tournament begins at 6 a.m. with weigh-in deadline of 6 p.m. at Guy Lombardo Marina. June 15: Moriches Anglers 45th Annual Shark Tournament; Entry fee of $350.00 per boat. Captains meeting 7 p.m. at Center Moriches VFW Hall on June 14. For more info call Chet at 631-878-9280.

June 22: Annual Woodcleft Fishing Station Shark Tournament; Entry fee is $300 and includes four cans of chum. All entry fees collected go to the winners with 70 percent to first place and 30 percent to second place. Optional Calcutta available. All sign ups and weigh-ins take place at Woodcleft Fishing Station. For more info call 516-378-8748.

June 22: 58th Annual Bay Shore Mako Tournament; Hosted by Bay Shore Tuna Club at Nicky’s on the Bay. Captain’s meeting Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m. at Nicky’s. Entry fee $400. Prize money for the Mako Division is 1st Place $6,000; 2nd Place $3,500; Tag & Release $2,250. Prizes for Other Shark and Bluefish divisions. Free docking for the tournament is available. June 22: Great Gun Anglers 43rd Annual Shark Tournament; Based out of Center Yacht Club, 222 Old Neck Road in Center Moriches. Entry fee $300 per boat. Mandatory captains meeting on June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Center Moriches V.F.W. Hall. New this year - weather date is following Saturday, June 29. June 30: 25th Annual Duke of Fluke Tournament; In Memory of Denise Witchey. Cash prizes go to the winners for 1st to 5th place and tackle prizes are awarded for 6th to 23rd place. The 24th place winner will earn a $200 Combs gift certificate. Junior Division for ages 12 and under that awards trophies for the top three fluke. Boundaries from Ocean Beach to Debs Inlet. Free Terminator rigs to first 100 anglers who sign up. During and after the weigh-in at Amity Beach, everyone will enjoy burgers, hot dogs, raffle prizes, music provided by Cutting Edge DJ and Entertainment. Register at Comb’s B&T in Amityville.
