OF TRUTH AND COD

A captain’s story of radio chatter, cold, and the calamities endured in pursuit of the winter king.
by Capt. John F. Bogan, Jr

Make no mistake - hearing isn’t necessarily believing when it comes to radio talk among captains, especially when it comes to whether they’re catching fish. Most fishermen like to think they are a bit cagier than the next guy. Few tell the truth, or at least the whole truth, when it comes to such matters. There is usually only a smidgen of honesty in all they say when talking on the radio. It is an ongoing game of chess, although few know how to play the actual game, and in this game, there are no rules.
