Greg Metcalf Greg Metcalf

Field Editor

Captain Greg Metcalf’s first summer job on the water began at age seventeen as a mate aboard a charter boat in Galilee. He worked his way through college by fishing aboard private yachts in tuna and billfish tournaments from Montauk, New York to Portland, Maine during his summer vacations.

After graduating from Providence, Greg began running private yachts and began to participate seriously in big game fishing tournaments, winning top honors in the Nantucket Billfish Tournament, Rhode Island Tuna Tournament, United States Atlantic Tuna Tournament, Block Island Billfish Tournament and The Wentworth Invitational Tuna Tournament, among others.

In 1983 Greg received his U.S Coast Guard Captain’s license and soon thereafter started Smoker Baits, a fishing tackle manufacturing business, while continuing to run sport fishing yachts. His company acquired Atom Lures, Bead Tackle and Bridgeport Diamond Jigs during his manufacturing career. In April of 2007 Greg sold Atom Lures Manufacturing to Uncle Josh Bait Company and started a charter fishing and sightseeing business aboard his boat, Striper Swiper, in Kennebunkport, Maine. During the winter of 2007 he began teaching a captain’s license course for a New England based school. Realizing his passion for teaching, and recognizing a real need for the service, he recently founded and currently operates Atlantic Captain Academy.
