Editor’s Log: 50K & Counting

Over the Memorial Day weekend, The Fisherman’s YouTube channel eclipsed 50,000 subscribers.  If you’re one of them, thank you!  And if you’re not, I hope at least you’re checking out our video content from time to time over at www.youtube.com/@thefishermanmagazine.

Not too shabby if you ask me (I know, you didn’t ask, sorry).  And today we’re also celebrating 14 years since The Fisherman’s YouTube channel was first launched back in June of 2011; we’re quickly approaching 3,000 posted videos generating nearly 14-million views, a million views a year!

If you didn’t already know, I do a weekly video fishing forecast that gets posted to YouTube every Thursday morning.  Based on the weekly fishing reports collected by our field editors over the preceding weekend (which you’ll find online every Monday), and through the photos and reports emailed to me at jhutchinson@thefisherman.com during the week from our readers, that 30-minute forecast becomes one of the thousands of videos archived on our channel.

In terms of the most popular videos on our channel, we’ll call these the “elite eight”.

A Better Connection (braid to mono)-Improved Albright Knot – 1.1 million views

How To: Tie The Power Snell – 338,000 views

How To Tie a Three-way Fluke Rig – 239,000 views

How to Tie the GT Knot – Ranked Strongest Braid to Mono Connection – 227,000 views

Seafood in White Wine and Garlic Sauce – 200,000 views

The Versatile Little Neck Poppers – 145,000 views

Fillet Fluke In Less Than A Minute – 134,000 views

How To – Choosing & Installing a Minn Kota Terrova – 133,000 views

If you were wondering why I listed the eight most-viewed videos on our YouTube channel rather than say five, it’s simply because I personally wouldn’t have made a top five list with my trolling motor install tutorial!  Which by the way, since I did that video back in August of 2019, I’ve added a leaning post, a new rocket launcher, had the forward seat reupholstered, upgraded to a Suzuki DF140, and yes, I’ve even washed her as some commenters suggested!

In July, our editorial team (myself, Jenni Ackerman, Dave Anderson and Matt Broderick) will be heading to Orlando, FL for the annual ICAST show where major manufacturers gather to unveil the latest, greatest products in the world of sportfishing.  You can expect that we’ll coming home loaded for bear with new product video spotlights, two a week being posted on our YouTube channel starting July 21.

The Fisherman Magazine has gone through many changes since its Long Island launch back in 1966.  During the electronic media evolution, I’ve sadly watched as many heralded print publications of my youth (NJ Outdoors, Newark Star Ledger and Beach Haven Times for starters) have ceased printing in this digital age.  We’ve been hit with that realism of print and mailing cost obstacle in the 21st century as well, but by learning to adapt, improvise and overcome, The Fisherman continues its high-speed troll at the edge in this quest for success.

As Dr. Thompson once said, “pay the ticket, enjoy the ride.”

And by all means, go find us on YouTube; no subscription required.
