Editor’s Log: New Year, Same Drive

There’s always something grounding about that first issue of the year. While most anglers are still shaking off the holidays, putting batteries back on charge, or standing in front of the tackle bench trying to remember where they left off, our wheels here at The Fisherman never really stop turning. Winter may be the quietest stretch on the water, but for us it’s the beginning of everything that’s coming—new regulations, new gear cycles, new fisheries to cover and, of course, a brand-new season to look forward to.

January has a way of resetting the compass. The blitzes and chaos of the fall run are behind us, and the anticipation of spring is still months away. What fills the gap is the type of fishing that tests an angler’s patience and creativity. Ling trips, cod missions on the right weather window, sweetwater trout, yellow perch, pickerel—none of it flashy, but all of it rewarding in its own way. This is the time of year when you figure out just how badly you want it. And every winter, I’m reminded that our community absolutely wants it. Boats still sail on the right days, trout tackle still sells, and anglers still prowl the back creeks for holdover stripers. The passion doesn’t fade; it simply shifts gears.

The New Year also brings us into show season, where many of you will stop by the booth, shake hands, talk fishing, pick up the new issues, and ask what’s coming next. These conversations are one of my favorite parts of the job. They’re a reminder that this magazine isn’t just written at a desk; it’s written in the collective experience of the anglers who read it, rely on it, and shape it. Every tip, every report, every rumor, every story passed across a show table finds its way, in some form, into what we do.

Our digital side also ramps up this time of year. The weekly e-newsletter continues straight through the winter, keeping you plugged into any bite worth talking about, and our YouTube channel will be loaded with new segments, including the 2025 ICAST coverage rolling out over the next few months. If you missed something from the fall, or want to brush up on techniques before spring, now is the time to dive into those videos and get the wheels turning again.

On the regulatory front, striped bass remains the big headline going into 2026. With ASMFC opting for status quo management heading into the new season, the dust hasn’t settled yet. Anglers are divided, managers are watching closely, and the fish, as always, will have the final say. We’ll continue covering every meeting, update and data point so you have a clear picture of where things stand and what it means on the water.

As we step into another year, I’m reminded of something that’s easy to overlook when the winter feels long: fishing is always closer than it seems. A mild day can spark a hot perch bite. A calm weekend can turn into a last-minute cod run. A new rod might lead to an afternoon casting session at a local pond or creek. Even in January, possibility never fully goes dormant.

So here’s to the first cast of 2026—whether it happens this month or sometime down the road. Here’s to new gear, new stories, new spots, and new memories waiting to be made. And here’s to another year of doing what we do best: connecting with a community that lives and breathes fishing 365 days a year. Happy New Year.

See you out there.
