Manny Butera donned his favorite hat and hit the Toms River on March 1, starting off the 2023 season with a 24-incher striper in 44-degree water temps. “Not a lot of action today hopefully better tomorrow,” Manny reported.

Hank Helms shows off a chunky largemouth he scored on one of his favorite South Jersey ponds. According to Hank, he and his dad Jason are gunning for glory in The Fisherman’s Dream Boat Fishing Challenge in 2023.

Carl Hartmann of the American Anglers got on the board early in 2023, scoring this 30-1/2-inch striped bass on the Hackensack a little after 6:30 a.m. on March 1. Carl released this fish, as well as the 32-1/2-incher he caught soon after.

Mike Martello credited The Fisherman for getting him into New Jersey’s winter perch fishing. “This is a fishery I really never considered in 30+ years of fishing until I subscribed to the magazine, and now I’m sure I’m going to make this part of my yearly rotation,” Mike said.

Tony D’Angelo fished a backwater stretch in North Jersey on the opening weekend of striped bass season in the Garden State, snaring his first striped bass of 2023 on the outgoing tide using a 6-inch Tsunami shad.

– “My wife Fish Hawk Val Seefelt got her first striper of the season on the Forked River today,” said Kenn Seefelt on March 6, saying they both believe it’s going to be a great striper season. “By the way, we were using Fishaholic finback shads, as usual,” he added.
