Halloween week is in the books and has had its share of tricks and treats. I was tricked into going to North Jersey to find stripers, and those that stuck to the South Jersey back bays were treated to some good bass action. Yes, I crossed the border and struck out on my quest to find a surf blitz, when I should have stayed put as the back bays from Cape May to Tuckerton which really came alive this week with a variety pack of stripers. From “fun-size” to whoppers, the back bays and rivers were very productive, especially for anglers fishing live eels or live spot. Tog action continues to be nothing short of amazing from the back bay bridges and oceanfront jetties and seawalls. Bluefin tuna are just a couple of miles off of GE Inlet, and the deep water sea bass action, with its 15-fish limit, is simply on fire.

It’s striper time according to just about every port in our coverage area. Our jetties, inlets, bays, rivers and especially our back bays were giving up good numbers of keeper size fish this week. Tactics vary from location to location, but live spot and live eels appear to be producing fish up and down our coast. We are not yet seeing much action off the beachfront, but the action from the inlets to the rivers has been a great way to kick off the fall. Sea bass fishing has been consistently good especially on the deeper water wrecks and reef sites. Tog are also being caught on the nearshore wrecks, but most anglers are focusing their tog effort along the sod banks, bridges and jetties. All these areas are producing an unbelievable amount of fish. Keeper ratio is on the low side, but with a one-fish bag limit currently, most anglers are at least able to find that one keeper fish.
