Action slowed on the bass and fluke grounds. Fluke action provided some keepers and the number of shorts was down. To the west try working the waters near Canarsie and to the east work the State Channel. Employ spearing, squid and small Gulp. Bass were available in the back bays, the beaches and ocean. Bunker chunks scored in the bays while ocean bass fell to trolled Mojo rigs.

Overall the reports indicated that we had a solid start to the fluke season. Both charter and party boats reported action that included keepers to 5 pounds and good numbers of shorts. The bay waters and back bay areas are the top spots. Go with the basics of spearing and squid either fished on a plain hook or a high/low rig with a teaser. Blues are already coming on strong and anglers targeting the flatties had their rigs hammered by blues in the 8 to 12-pound class. Weakfish are biting at the Copiague Hole on small plastics. Bass can be found at the State Channel and the Pink Hotel. They will respond to bunker, trolled spoons or trolled tubes.
