Frank at Gabriel Tackle was, well, frank: “Bluefin tuna from footballs to 60 pounds 10 miles north of Manasquan Inlet.” The few of the temperamental transients that were being caught struck the 8-inch sand eel ChatterLures side tracker. “The late (bluefin) season is looking good,” he predicted.

“The canyons really lit up before the bad weather, and it was nuts from the Babylon to the Spencer,” enthused Capt. Rich at Jersey Hooker Outfitters. Yellowfin to 90 pounds and longfin to 50 pounds on the chunk, with big eye to 250 pounds slamming CD 30 plugs. In the mix were good numbers of swordfish, specimen king mackerel, and stud wahoo. As the systems move out, he expects the on-fire fishing to resume.

“Fish all over. Really good yellowfin action from the Triple Wrecks to the Bacardi,” remarked Capt. Rich at Jersey Hooker Outfitters. Plugs, poppers, chunks, jigs, trolling...the skipper said it didn’t matter, as all methods were stuffing the boxes. Yellowfin were topping at 80 pounds. Bluefin were being caught in the Mud Hole, with any number of “ghosts” causing more than a few break offs. The east elbow of the Hudson Canyon was surrendering the occasional bigeye to 225 pounds that are waxing 5.5-knot speed Bomber CD 30 plugs, Joe Shutes, and Sterling Wide Trackers.

“Some of our guys went out to the Triple Wrecks area yesterday (Saturday) after that wind and rain and the yellowfin were biting the props off the boat,” declared a fired-up Capt. Rich at Jersey Hooker Outfitters. The fish were in the 50- to 60-pound class and the skipper has no doubt that the assaults to jigs, poppers and chunks will have resumed by Sunday afternoon. He’d heard that a few bigeye were being caught at the east elbow of the Hudson.

“Don’t be afraid to drop to 30- or even 20-pound test fluoro,” advised Capt. Rich at Jersey Hooker Outfitters while discussing the yellowfin chunk bite around the Triple Wrecks. Because of the intense fishing pressure, the fish can, and are, getting somewhat leader shy and are prone to refuse offerings on a heavier tether. Poppers and plugs are also putting some yellowfin on ice.

“A killer yellowfin bite at the Triple Wrecks and the Bacardi,” informed Capt. Rich at Jersey Hooker Outfitters. The fish are in the 40- to 60-pound range. “Jigs, chunks, poppers, trolling, doesn’t matter. They’re all working,” added Capt. Rich. He noted that there were also a few white marlin being caught on plastics in the same areas.
