FISHING LOGS: Long Island, Metro NY
North Shore

Posted By Bob Danielson, July 9, 2018
The word is out that there are porgies paving the bottom of the Sound from one end to the other. All the reports say that they are everywhere. They seem to still be relatively shallow with most reports having them in water less than 20 feet deep. Just about every angler is using clam to catch them but worms are taking their fair share of scup too. There have been fish up to 2.5 pounds making several reports this week so there are still some big porgies out there. The beaches and docks in the area are giving up loads of porgies so you don’t need to be on a boat to catch them either. The fluke fishing is still solid with plenty of fish to about 8 pounds being reported in with plenty of 5 pound class fish getting landed. Squid and spearing fished on a hook or tipping a bucktail have been producing plenty of flatties but so have bucktails tipped with Gulp. The stripers are still around although the biggest bass we’re hearing about this week is just topping the 30 pound mark. That’s nothing to sneeze at but smaller than the 40 pound fish we were hearing about a week or two prior. Blues are almost non-existent in the Sound still but we’re hearing about a few fish up to 7 or 8 pounds.
