Cod are becoming more and more common bycatch by anglers seeking blackfish and sea bass, and the next month or so should signal the best bite of the season so get on it before the action passes you by! (Photo courtesy of the Black Hawk)
This is a great time for bottom fisherman in Southern New England with blackfish, sea bass, porgies, winter flounder, stripers, bluefish, huge choggies and of course cod hitting the deck. One reef or rockpile can, at times, produce any and all of these species, and you might even see some special guests like haddock or weakfish join in on the fun from time to time. This week saw a notable improvement on the cod bycatch, even if the dedicated cod trips had some difficulty getting out to the true “fishing grounds,” which is a good sign of lots of fish around.
