New England

It was a rather slow week of reports following some windy and cold weather the last few days. The cod boats found mixed results over the weekend—some did well while others just ok—but they all saw lots of promise with schools of mackerel on the increase and lots of “life” on the sonar. Ice fishing opportunities continue to increase, especially as you move more to the north and west, but the post-weekend weather warm-up may eliminate a lot of the new ice made over the weekend. The holdover striper bite remains very good in the tidal rivers, perhaps some of the best action of the season so far. Smaller single-hook offerings are doing the lion's share of the catching, but anglers who know where the big girls hide in the winter are doing well on fish to 20 pounds by up-sizing their offerings.

Regardless of how you spend the week, we here at The Fisherman Magazine wish you a happy and healthy New Year!
