New Jersey & Delaware Bay

Lewes Harbour Marina greeted angler Mike Thompson on Saturday afternoon as he brought in this 25-inch, 9.85-pound tautog taken aboard the Katydid with Capt. Brent and mate Chris.
The start of 2020 puts tautog in clear focus as the number one target for fishing activity along the New Jersey coast. In this week’s online reports, we learn that there are still a number of charter and party boats leaving ports from Shark River and Belmar down to Lewes, DE in search of blackfish. While ice fishermen are bemoaning the lack of hardwater opportunities, the weather forecast for the weekend ahead has balmy temperatures well worth a visit to the docks to hop aboard a boat destined for the tautog grounds – and open water opportunities for freshwater anglers looks equally good for Saturday and Sunday. While those of us here at The Fisherman would love to wet a line with you this week, the 37th Garden State Outdoor Sports Show returns to the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison from January 9-12 where our staff will be set up throughout the event at booth #327 near the front gate. This year’s goodie is from our friends at Savage baits; stop by for details on this hot bait that’s yours with a new or renewing subscription to The Fisherman. In addition to the vendors, a wide-range of outdoor speakers cover all topics from big game hunting to fishing the surf, streams and offshore grounds (which includes a few of your favorite Fisherman contributors including Nick Honachefsky, Jim Freda, Austin Perilli and DJ Muller). If you’re heading out to the show, save $3 on the price of admission by purchasing tickets in advance at www.gsoss.com. Show hours are Thursday, January 9 and Friday, January 10 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, January 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, January 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
