Find the bait and you’ll find the bass this week. That’s what Lauren Salvioli did as she caught and released this big Long Island Sound bass a few days ago.
I’ll be the first to admit it: it simply doesn’t feel like June yet. After a very mild winter, and predictions/hopes of an early spring season, thigs went to hell in a handbasket between a cold spring and COVID-19 bologna. That said, we are now in the 6th month and it’s time to put up or shut up! Bassing took a slight step forward this week with fish to the mid40-pound class boated in Long Island Sound, word of a couple 40-pounders in the surf, and a lot of sub-legal fish being seen most everywhere. Black sea bass fishing remains very good in Long Island Sound so long as you stay west of the Connecticut River, and up in Buzzards Bay it’s good all over. Once again bluefish reports were rather widespread this week with fish from the Canal to NYC and some slammers pushing the high teens mixed-in with 3-pounders. Fluke action improved a few notches, too, with some big fish landed off Block Island, Montauk and Fishers; just be ready to work through some shorts as ratios pushing 20-to-1 were reported by some boats.
