The weather is again the talk of the fishing front with snow, sleet, freezing rain, numbing temperatures and gale winds combining to make for a non-fishing week. Star Island Yacht Club has announced their 2017 tournament schedule. They kick things off with the 31st Annual Shark Tournament taking place June 15 to 17. Participating anglers have a chance to win one or more of several prizes, valued at more than $500,000 total. Other tournament dates are as follows: 31st Annual Shark Tournament; Captain’s Meeting, June 15; Fishing, June 16-17. 25th Annual Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament; Captain’s Meeting, August 3; Fishing, August 4-5. 8th Annual Striped Bass/Columbus Day Tournament; Captain’s Meeting, October 7; Fishing, October 8. 4th Annual Fluke Tournament; Now one-week long. Dates to come, pending posting of regulations by NMFS. Per Environmental Conservation Law 13-0338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively.
For anglers who would like to get in on a competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire. Each of Star Island’s boats can accommodate up to six anglers.
