There was no shortage of ice fishing opportunities in our region this past weekend.

Ice fishing was the only option for those looking to bend a rod this week as record setting low temperatures and Thursday’s snowstorm kept the region in a deep freeze. There are still a handful of South Shore and Montauk party boats prepared to target cod, pollock, ling and possibly some mackerel weather permitting, and it looks like this week’s warming trend might provide the break we’re looking for. White perch and herring might also be options once the cold breaks.

If you’re looking for some indoor sport on the weekend, Striper Day, hosted by Surfcasters Journal, takes place this Saturday at Hofstra University’s Student Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The show will feature more than 80 vendors that specialize in surf fishing, and ongoing seminars by some of the region’s best surf fishermen. There will also be a surfcasting short film presentation. Door prizes will be given to the first 400 attendees who attend beginning at 11 a.m. and there will also be a giant raffle drawing. For more information, visit www.striperday.com.
