FISHING LOGS: Long Island, Metro NY
East End

Posted By Tony Salerno, April 16, 2018
Jumbo porgies will be on the menu beginning May 1st.
The month of May cannot come soon enough as all the wind and continuing cold fronts thus far in April have truly put a lid on any fishing reports. I heard some rumors of a few flounder here and there, but I’ll take those rumors with a grain of salt. The truth is, with the exception of some bunker passing through both the Shinnecock and Quogue Canals, both spots have been very quiet on the flounder scene. At Montauk, no one has been flounder fishing in the harbor and none of the boats including the Viking Fleet have steamed outside the harbor for cod.
On a bright note, striped bass season is now officially open. The greater concentration of the linesiders are still way to the west. Fret not however as the bass will be on the east end of the island in short order, especially with the presence of bunker in the bays. In addition, bluefish should be here before the end of the month since the choppers are already beginning to trickle into the Raritan bay area. Before you know it, they will be prowling Peconic and Shinnecock bays. Porgy season opens May 1st and that’s prime time to catch those platter size scup. So hang in there folks. We should have some good fishing in a matter of weeks.
