First Weakfish Reports
Striper Spread Throughout GSB
As we head into the end of the month, the first official weakfish reports have come in as predicted (check out the weakfish plastics articles in the latest glossy issue for new lure options). Stripers spread east on the island weekly, with some fish up to 20 pounds making their way into Peconic Bay in the past week. The inside and outside togging has been consistent with increasing temperatures on both the North and South Shores. We’re also less than a week away from both The Fisherman’s Dreamboat Challenge and Coastal Kayak Clash kicking off this year!

Chris from the Montauk Anglers Club reported the beginning of last week saw the first schoolies from Chris on the open beach in Montauk. Anglers also had some keeper-sized stripers along the East Hampton stretch, to the west of them. Blackfish have made a move to the north side of the point in the shallows and were chomping on soft baits like clam but crabs worked as well. Shrimp and spearing have been the main baits in the area according to Chris.

Down at West Lake Marina Dave told me no reports this week in Montauk but the spring anticipating has been going on. He did hear the back waters of Gardiners and Peconics have had some small stripers in those areas. He did note that the gannets have been working up front by the light which is a sign of bait in the area. Give the marina a call at (631) 668-5600 for more information.

Scott from East End Bait and Tackle told me to target the small creeks and back bay areas of both Shinnecock and Peconic bays. We have heard of a few keeper sized fish being taken. We have also heard of the first weakfish being taken in our area. Best to target the back bay areas of Shinnecock and Peconic as well. Weakfish like pink and white colors but as you know whatever you have most confidence in should be your go to. The Shinnecock Canal should be seeing signs of life any day if not already. The first bite here is pretty tight lipped. We have not heard any reports of porgies yet but I'm sure those dinner plate sized fish will be out in the Jessups area for opening day on May 1st. The fluke are making their way in from the deep as reported by some commercial guys. Let's hope they are here for the season opener on May 4th. They are open seven days, 8-6 Monday-Saturday and 8-3 on Sunday. The shop is stocked and ready for your next trip. Their freezers are full of all the local baits in season. Be sure to bring in your gear for service or repairs before your next trip.

Craig from WeGo Bait and Tackle in Southold reports weakfish have moved into the bay with squid strips on hi/low rigs producing best. Some squid are also being taken from under the lights at most of the Greenport docks on pink and white colored jigs. Some bunker are also roaming the bay which has also drawn in a scattering of stripers to 20 pounds. No report of porgies yet, however that should change within the next week or two when the weather becomes warmer and more consistent.
