Striper Season Opens Monday & Belmont Fishing Festival this Weekend
The long-awaited official opener for the striper season opens this upcoming Monday! The same regulations will remain in effect since the season left off with one fish between 29 to 31 inches. The good news is the bass are already around the island and have been actively chewing in the back bays on worms and artificials. Tog season got off to a tougher start due to some tough weather, but some successful trips inside the bays and out on the ocean reefs proved the fish were in place and starting to feed. Keep in mind that this weekend is the big family spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lake has been stocked for the event, and while fishing the event, a freshwater fishing license is not needed! It’s a great way to get into the sport.

Bob from Bobs Bait and Tackle let me know the docks on the inside by Amityville have been getting some striper play in the last week. Tanner Park up the block from the store has been producing fish to about 30 inches. Sand and bloodworms are both getting good looks from stripers but Bob did suggest fishing a small popping plug in the early mornings for good topwater success.

Mike at Saltwaters Bait and Tackle in West Islip let me know hes getting some very solid sand beach reports from his customers. He noted that some of these reports have been coming from the Robert Moses stretch of beach. Bucktails and swim shads have gotten the nod recently from the casters. The docks inside the bay in the West Islip and Babylon areas have been seeing some action with fish up to 31 inches. If you can find some fresh bunker, that has been a go-to bait,

Scott over at East End Bait and Tackle reported most reports of striped bass have come from the ocean beaches both east and west of the Shinnecock Inlet. Dusk to dawn are the best times and rubber baits, bucktails and swimming plugs would be best. Since they are showing out front you can be sure that they are in our bays as well.

Mike at Bernie's Bait and Tackle reported a good run of stripers near Rockaway, Coney Island area and inside Jamaica Bay. Some bigger fish into the 20-pound class have been reported but the majority of them have been right around the slot and just under as well. Mike said swimming plugs from 4 to 5 inches have been the key to getting the most looks. Some soft plastics in the same size range have been getting it done as well.
