Blackfishing is still holding up with keepers to 8 pounds coming over the rails according to Bob Matthews at the Fisherman's Den. Bob said we are on the up side of the winter with spring right around the corner and so far we can't complain about the weather. The main topic of discussion at the shop has been the new striped bass and bluefish regulations. Bob told me his personal option is 28 to 38 inches which allows for a fair harvest while protecting the larger breeders. The bonus fish will allow for anglers to take home a better eating fish and starting in May will help back bay anglers. The new bluefish regs will be three for private anglers and five fish for those fishing on a for-hire boat; this includes snappers, which Bob said was a bit too much. Some feel these fish don't matter as a food source but many others especially anglers from PA love them. The Den will be open daily in March.

Bobby at Fisherman's Den in Belmar remarked that there are definitely a fair amount of schoolie stripers in the suds as he had been casting and catching most days this week with one fish over 28 inches. Shark River flounder pounding is picking up as well as blackfishing off the rocks. Try bloodworms for flatties and green crabs for the tog off the end of the jetty tips.

Over at the Fisherman's Den in Belmar Bob Matthew told me trout fishing has been good so far with some nice fish being taken. Some of the better fishing has been in Spring Lake for the trout left over from the Opening Day Kids Contest, he said.
