The Super Chic just pulled in when we made contact 4 p.m. Sunday, and it had been a Saturday-into-Sunday overnighter for the Ship Bottom Brewery Brigade led by Derek the Dominator. Working 6- to 10-ounce butterflies and hammered jigs in some of Capt. Ted's favorite mid-range spots resulted in load of 45- to 55-pound bluefin. Nighttime in the Hudson proved a bust, but pot hopping through the morning hours saw a boat limit of butterfish and sardine chunk-crazed 3- to 7-pound mahi join the bluefin in the box. Earlier that week trolling Nos. 1 and 2 Clark spoons put a mother lode of bonito and Spanish mackerel on ice.

Last weekend, the Tommy Hook 'Em charter from Manahawkin was on Super Chic with Capt. Ted White. It was a whack, stack and pack the box pot-hopping rodeo with a boat limit of mahi to 10-pounds, then the party wiped a pile of 10-pound golden tiles in the 500- to 600 foot reach, adding it to the luscious larder. "But no tuna," lamented the skipper, opining that it looks like it's shaping to a be a repeat of last year when the majority of the tuna stayed way off the bank. The Hook 'Em Harvest took place in the Wilmington Canyon. When we spoke with Capt. Ted early Sunday morning, a wired, fired and thoroughly inspired Southern Regional High School Fishing Club was aboard, and the destination for the overnight venture was one of Capt. Ted's choice areas between the Carteret and Toms canyons.

"Our first canyon trip is in a couple of weeks and we're ready for it all," enthused a pumped Capt. Ted White on Super Chic Charters, adding that although he enjoyed the inshore season, he and the crew are chomping at the roller guides to get offshore. While yellowfin, bigeye, longfin and bluefin will be the primary targets, he stresses that mahi are also players.

"We're just pulling in," quipped Capt. Red White from the wheel of the Super Chic 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It was a fairly productive canyon trip for the Tom Hook party from Manahawkin. The chunks of butterfish and sardines were inhaled by three dozen mahi to 10 pounds, a 100-pound swordfish, a pair of bluefin to 35 pounds, and four robust yellowfin to 70 pounds.
