Weekapaug Bait & Tackle

July 6, 2020:
The bass bite cooled off a bit; at Weekapaug Bait and Tackle in Weekapaug they said the breachways have had plenty of smaller bass and some blues too, but keepers and larger fish have been harder to hook this week. Porgy action remains very good for the daytime bait-dunkers.

Furthering my point about the second wave of bigger fish, the guys at Weekapaug Bait and Tackle in Weekapaug had news about a 50-incher caught and released from a local beach (not a breachway fish). Although there was a 50-pounder pulled from one of the breachways too, it wasn't a bass it was a giant ray of some kind. The only other bass news was coming from the ponds where piles of schoolies are crushing small offerings and mixing with small blues as well. The daytime action in the breachways has been mostly big scup with some short fluke here and there as well.

The breachways have loaded up with big scup according to the crew at Weekapaug Bait and Tackle in Weekapaug. So it's big scup by day and then the bass roll in after dark with a few fish to the top of the slot, but most of them under 28 inches this week. A few guys have bucktailed up a few keeper fluke off the ends of the jetties too, but flukers are finding mostly shorts so far. Bluefish are around but not in big numbers and seem to be popping up without any real pattern. There have been several reports of bonito sightings around Point Judith and one really nice one was caught, 23 inches and 7 pounds.

Friday morning saw some full on blitzes around Weekapaug Breachway said the crew at Weekapaug Bait and Tackle in Weekapaug. (That's a lot of Weekapaugs). The fish were schoolie bass with some approaching keeper size with blues to 7 pounds mixed-in. There was a nice 42-inch striper landed from the rocks at Watch Hill this week, so the bass are getting bigger. Bait dunkers have been catching nice scup this week and there have been a few fluke reported in the shore catches as well.

Over at Weekapaug Bait and Tackle the shop was busy but they were able to slow down for long enough to drop a quick report on me. They said it has been a weedy week but when anglers find clean water they are catching. Bass and bluefish are in and the bite is good, again, when the weed allows. A good way to fight the weeds is to fish the second half of the dropping tide in an inlet or breachway.
