The Carnivore sportfishing crew out of Dockside Bait & Tackle in Sewaren checked in with a report from a midweek overnighter to the Hudson Canyon. Capt. Rick Woerner, 2nd captain Anthony Coluccio, Nick (Scojo) Dight, and Pat Salvo arrived to find a fleet of boats and pilot whales. They started with trolling and put a 132-pound bigeye on the deck after a 15-minute fight. Things got quiet for a while — the chunk bite never materialized overnight — so they trolled again for a bit then switched to tilefishing, which produced 11 golden tilefish and the best surprise of the night, a white marlin. "We begin throwing in whole sardines to keep him around and watch as he devours them. We pitch a sardine on a medium heavy spinning rod and get hooked up a few minutes later. The fish puts on an amazing aerial display and 30 minutes later the crew has a 80-pound class white marlin boat side," Woerner said. They wound up with the bigeye, the white marlin that was released, the tilefish and seven mahi "on a gorgeous, calm, night in the canyon. Can't ask for a much better trip than that," he said.
