Over at Captain Morgan's in Madison the striper bite really lit up along the local beaches late-week and through the weekend. Captain Morgan at Captain Morgan's Bait & Tackle in Madison told readers that what little ice exists in his area is unsafe. For that reason anglers have been concentrating on open water and targeting (A) trout in Trout Management Areas and Chatfield Hollow Trout Park; (B) broodstock Atlantic salmon in the Shetucket River and Naugatuck River; (C) striped bass at the Derby Dam on the Housatonic River; and (D) bass, pickerel, bluegills, and yellow perch in ponds and lakes including Quonnipaug Lake. Regarding broodstock salmon in the Shetucket River, the best fishing has been in the stretch between Scotland Dam in Windham County and Occum Dam in Norwich. Asked about fishing prospects for February, Captain Morgan thinks that if there is to be any safe ice this winter, it will have to start forming in early February. Otherwise, the only fishing will be in open water. In any event, anglers looking for action in February, whether in open water or under the ice, could do a lot worse than fish the spots previously mentioned.

  • August 27, 2018 Open or Close

Captain Morgan's in Madison said there was lots of small bait running the beaches with a mix of small bass and blues staying with them. The evening crowd was cashing in all week. Late night fishers were finding a few better fish. Bottom dunkers were doing well on a wide array of species from porgies to togs to sea robins and small blues. It's still August but things are starting to feel a little fall-like, at least as far as the fishing in concerned.
