23-PLUS-POUND BLACKFISH CAUGHT & RELEASED

Luke Wiggins caught, weighed and released this impressive 23.7-pound blackfish on Saturday, November 28, just as the fall season came to a close.

As I was going through the report contacts for the week, I received an email from Karen Westerberg over at AW Marina in New London, CT. In her email she noted that Luke Wiggins brought in an impressive fish to be weighed on the closing day of the Connecticut blackfish season as he landed a 23.7-pound, 32.5-inch monster of a fish! While he didn’t divulge the secret rockpile where the Titanic tog had been calling its home, he did note that he landed it on a blackfish jig and green crab purchased at AW Marina. What’s even better is that after weighing the fish Luke took it back down to the water and successfully released the fish into the Thames River, hopefully to keep on feeding and perhaps eventually eclipsing either Thien Nguyen’s 26.6-pound state record tog, or maybe even Ken Westerfeld’s 28.8-pound World Record fish. Karen weighed blackfish 15.7 and 17.5 pounds just last week, so the waters outside the Thames have been producing some big tog this fall!

But with the season now closed in Connecticut, New England anglers must either travel north to Massachusetts or Rhode Island, or south to New Jersey, Delaware or Maryland where the seasons remain open until December 31.
