The 25th Annual Jersey Coast Anglers Association (JCAA) Fluke Tournament took place on June 15th. The weather forecast of high winds throughout the day along with big waves resulted in only 188 entries competing in seven regions throughout the state. Although it was windy in some areas during the early afternoon, most areas had sun and very light winds during the morning. The fishing turned out to be very good for many of our contestants.
The largest fluke weighed in was 8.79 pounds, 27.75 inches and was caught by Jesse McLean of Toms River and weighed in at Shipwreck Grill in the Manasquan Region. In addition to the $1,200 first place award McLean and crew also swept the regional and overall calcutts for a grand total in winnings of $10,870.
The second largest fluke in the tournament of 6.64 pounds was caught by Matt Sorrentino of Ship Bottom who won both the $50 and $100 calcuttas for the Barnegat Bay region. Matt narrowly edged out Anthony Alegre of Forked River who weighed in a 6.60-pound, the third largest of the tournament. George R. Broome of Forked River had the smallest fish this year which won a region prize weighing in at 2.35 pounds at South Harbor Marina in the Barnegat Bay region.
The awards ceremony and boat giveaway will be held on Thursday night at the Clarion Hotel on Route 37 West. Follow the signs to find the registration site (registration is between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.). At least one person from your boat must attend at the time of the drawing in order to win a prize.
Be sure to bring your registration affidavit to save yourself time at the registration desk. Finger food and soft drinks will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. with a cash bar open throughout the event. All winning numbers will be announced in the ballroom with port prizes distributed and the winning registration ticket pulled to win the boat and motor package.
The JCAA Fluke Tournament had a field of 188 boats this season; all told, JCAA will pay out over $30,000 in cash along with region prizes and door prizes worth thousands of dollars.
