Long Island, Metro Video Fishing Forecast October 1st, 2026
The nor’easter has passed, and anglers across Long Island are getting back on the water as the fall run begins to take shape. This week, we take a look at the latest beach access updates following the storm, including several closures and reopenings from the western South Shore to Montauk. On the fishing front, better striped bass are beginning to show along the eastern beaches, while the back bays are producing fish as water conditions improve. Bluefish and bass are also chasing bait in western waters, and the bottom-fishing action remains strong out east. Plus, we preview the October issue of The Fisherman Magazine, check in with our local correspondents, highlight some notable catches, and share fly-fishing tips from Mark Sedotti.

Striped bass fishing took center stage this week, with strong action reported from the South Shore, East End and North Shore following the recent nor’easter. Fish into the 40- and 50-inch class were caught from the surf, inlets and bridges, with bucktails, soft plastics, darters and tins all producing depending on location and time of day. I also found an excellent after-dark bite at an East End inlet during the week, with dozens of striped bass ranging from roughly 15 to 35 pounds taking soft plastics. The Fred Golofaro Montauk Surf Fishing Classic also produced some quality fish. Gary Krist took first place in the striped bass division with a 43-inch fish, followed by John Perrone with a 41-3/4-inch bass and Rich Corallo with a 41-1/2-inch fish. Krist also topped the bluefish division with a 10.51-pound blue. Elsewhere, porgies remain available along portions of the North Shore, weakfish were mixed in with the North Fork bass bite, and shops across the region are gearing up for the upcoming blackfish season with green crabs and fresh supplies.

Pablo from J&J Sports in Patchogue reported an incredible stretch of striped bass fishing from Shinnecock to Fire Island last week. He heard of fish exceeding 40 pounds caught by customers both from the sand beaches and inside Shinnecock and Moriches inlets. Rubber shads and bucktails were top choices in the inlets, while darters and SP Minnows produced well along the beaches. A good amount of action took place during the day, with some especially strong daytime bites developing as well. Pablo personally landed bass to 20 pounds during the week, while shop regular Joe connected with a 39-pound fish on a bucktail Thursday night.

Mike at Saltwaters Bait and Tackle in West Islip reported that striped bass moved into the local surf in a big way following the storm. Democrat Point, Cedar Beach and Robert Moses all produced solid action, with the best stretch beginning last Wednesday and carrying through much of the week. The bite has slowed somewhat since then, but there are still plenty of bass around, including some fish pushing the 50-inch mark. The better action has been after dark, although daytime anglers are still finding fish. Darters, bottle plugs and bucktails have been doing most of the work at night, while diamond jigs have been a productive daytime choice.
