2025 Marine Electronics Buyer’s Guide

buyers-guide

Innovation and integration and AI lead the way for the future in marine electronics!

As we cruise into 2025, inflationary prices are still somewhat elevated from everything from eggs to outboards. However, there is still one area where boating anglers can get some of the biggest recreational bang for their buck, and that’s marine electronics.

One of the most exciting aspects of marine electronics, especially with radar and navigation systems, will be the slow and steady infiltration of AI (artificial intelligence). AI will influence safe route planning that avoids known obstacles when underway, as well as being an electronic watchdog for potential collisions when using radar in limited visibility situations, with much more potential to come.

Yet another trend in marine electronics is the vertical integration of large companies offering more and varied products to loyal customers who have purchased their products and are already “part of the fold.” Of course Minn Kota’s newest Riptide Instinct QUEST Trolling Motor’s integration with Humminbird created unique motor to MFD functionality that is a game changer for anglers. Garmin introduced a new Force Kraken line of electric trolling motors last season that also integrates with their popular multi-function displays. Brunswick Group’s Navico unit, which produces Lowrance and Simrad marine electronics, morphed sister company Mercury’s MotorGuide electric trolling motor unit into a next-gen production that they are calling Recon electric trolling motors. These will be offered by both Lowrance and Simrad and will also integrate with some of their existing MFDs and those in the planning stages moving forward.

With so much to talk about, let’s get right into the new marine electronics mix.

FURUNO

Introduced at last year’s Miami Boat Show, Furuno’s next-gen TZtouchXL multi-function color displays have a lot to offer, setting new standards of the “wow” factor. The TZtouchXL screens are offered in five sizes ranging from 10, 13, 16, 22 and 24-inch models. The TZT10X, TZT13X, and TZT16X feature a built-in 1kW TruEcho CHIRP or CW (constant wave) fishfinder, as well as built-in 235kHz or 455kHz CHIRP side-scan capability that can show fish and structure in high detail port and starboard, providing crucial insights for successful fishing trips. The fishfinder and side-scan functions can be accessed by the supersized TZT22X and TZT24X MFDs across the NavNet network. NavNet TZtouchXL delivers the ability to tailor the system with a wide array of high-powered Fish Finders to cater to their fishing needs. For anglers who like to deep drop, the DFF3-UHD Network Fish Finder offers high-power 2kW/3kW output to go deep. The DFF3D multi-beam sonar shows fish and structures around the vessel in 3D while generating amazingly detailed custom-shaded relief maps.

All the essential fishing tools like Magnetron and Solid-State Doppler Radars, AIS, and NAVpilot Autopilots are compatible. Plus, if you have a Furuno Sonar, you can even display it right on your TZtouchXL screen with an optional video kit. The NavNet TZtouchXL series MFDs include exclusive, singular features like the new TZ MAPS with BathyVision and AI Routing. Plus, they pack all this power and performance in a fresh and easy-to-use interface. The 10-inch TZT10X and 13-inch TZT13X feature a hybrid control, incorporating all of the multi-touch capabilities of the larger TZtouchXL series, as well as Furuno’s RotoKey control knob and dedicated soft-touch keys, making operations easy in any sea conditions. The all-glass 16-inch TZT16X, 22-inch TZT22X, and 24-inch TZT24X boast super-wide displays with exceptional clarity and brightness. The all-glass design allows these big-screen MFDs to be mounted side-by-side for a seamless all-glass appearance to enhance both the functionality and attitude of the helm. Every TZtouchXL model features a powerful hexacore processor for lightning-fast response.

What sets these new TZtouchXL MFDs apart from the competitive pack is an all-new chart offering called TZ MAPS. BathyVision, a new feature in TZ MAPS, offers anglers truly ‘off the charts’ bathymetric data with contour lines that can be configured with a single tap, with a resolution of 3 inches between contours! Fishermen will appreciate the custom depth color shading that enhances the bathymetric data, creating fishing charts of unmatched detail and clarity. All of this can be rendered with custom color palettes and terrain shading, giving anglers an electronic charting experience that goes far beyond any capabilities to date. When connected to a DRS Radar, two new, powerful safety features are unlocked in the TZtouchXL MFD…Risk Visualizer and AI Avoidance Route. Risk Visualizer is a unique function of Furuno Radars that provides a 360-degree visual representation of potential collision risks of approaching objects around the vessel. The new AI Avoidance Route feature takes all the information provided by the Radar and instantly provides a safe route around those hazards, which can be sent to a Furuno NAVpilot series autopilot with a single tap.

RAYMARINE

Raymarine recently announced that its latest Axiom operating system, LightHouse 4.7, is now available for download. With Power-Pole integration, Axiom users can stow and deploy Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchors and control all MOVE trolling motor models directly from a slide-out sidebar on their chartplotter display. They can also take advantage of the Power-Pole MOVE’s advanced navigation and seamlessly switch between the MOVE trolling motor and Raymarine Evolution autopilot while navigating a route or waypoint.

The new Smart Drift feature in the Axiom chartplotter is an innovative addition that takes the guesswork out of starting a drift when bottom fishing, deep dropping, or fishing over wrecks. To calculate a drift, anglers can select a chart location or use Axiom’s sonar history feature to scroll back the fish finder timeline and identify interesting bottom structure or a wreck for a drift-start location. Smart Drift then creates a drift vector line and start location after taking a precise measurement of the wind and current conditions impacting the boat. On the fishfinder screen, anglers can use the zoom mode to automatically track the bottom when in view. The streamlined magnification window makes it easier to view and move about the water column. In addition, anglers can enter a GoTo destination waypoint directly from the fish finder screen via a long press on any target of interest.

Seakeeper

Over the past decade, Seakeeper’s range of onboard gyrostabilizers have brought both tranquility and confidence to boater’s who are susceptible to occasional bouts of mal de mer from Mother Nature’s often fickle coastal seas. A few years back, they introduced yet another unique and more universal stabilization device in the form of their Seakeeper Ride System. In my view and in the opinions of many others, Seakeeper Rides are treating coastal boaters to a game-changing experience when negotiating choppy seas. Seakeeper Ride Systems are available in a variety of sizes, including the model 450 for boats up to 26 feet in length; the 525 for vessels from 27 to 30 feet; the 600 for coastal craft from 31 to 36 feet; plus the recently introduced model 750 (in both twin and quad formats) for boats from 37 to 42 feet in length.

Seakeeper Ride controllers are mounted to your boat’s transom, below the waterline. Using custom, proprietary inertial sensing hardware and software, the system understands how the boat is behaving in all three axes and directs the deployment of the rotary blades to counteract pitch, roll and yaw. As the blades are activated, they create lift at the transom, managing the vessel’s motion instantly in real time. Wave motions can happen consistently or inconsistently, they can be big or small and can come from any direction. Often, these motions occur in just milliseconds. Thanks to proven control software and hardware, Seakeeper Ride’s proprietary, rapid-deployment rotary blades make up to 100 adjustments every second to combat wave motions. Seakeeper Ride’s vessel attitude control system can eliminate up to 70% of a boat’s pitch and roll underway and this is not just marketing hype, it’s been scientifically proven by many dozens of recent sea trial tests. Manually adjusting trim and list from a keypad is somewhat anachronistic or old school. Seakeeper Ride is completely automatic with no manual keypad adjustments needed. Just turn the key and enjoy the ride. The Seakeeper Ride interface is compatible with select models including Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, Navico, Lowrance, B&G, Furuno and Q Experience. The intuitive Seakeeper Ride System predicts motions and responds instantaneously to eliminate them before they’re felt with no buttons to push or adjustments to make, providing a seamless and safe boating experience. The reliable drivetrain is completely sealed in a dry and greased environment with no mechanical exposure to saltwater. Installation is fairly straightforward and can be easily installed on most transoms, both in new and aftermarket boats.

Built to operate in the toughest marine environments, the night vision camera is IP67 waterproof and shock-rated. Nightwave seamlessly integrates into any vessel’s electronics by connecting to most major brand multi-function color displays (MFDs) via the analog video output. With flexible mounting and setup, Nightwave can also connect to a mobile device via Wi-Fi for an enhanced user experience. The main difference between Nightwave and some high-end thermal competitive models is that the Sionyx product amplifies available light in a high-res digital format, whereas thermal units use heat signatures to construct the target, usually via a lower-res image. Nightwave’s technology provides clear color images in near-total darkness and is simple to install and operate.

Notable standard features on the Sionyx Nightwave include one mlx moonless starlight sensitivity that allows mariners to see well beyond human eyesight and detect a man-sized object at 150 yards; a high-resolution detector that provides upgraded quality imaging capability in near total darkness; a wide 44-degree field of view that greatly enhances situational awareness to spot unexpected obstacles, debris, markers, vessels, unlighted navigation buoys and more; convenient installation flexibility, with permanent mounting hardware that is included, as well as a standard quarter-inch, 20-mount interface; ball-up or ball-down installation flexibility to meet any challenging mounting requirements; a small-profile housing and relatively light net weight of approximately 2 pounds; plus access to the latest firmware and software releases are conveniently available through the Sionyx mobile app.

With an MSRP under $2,000, the Sionyx design team has created a relatively affordable, high-res, digital night vision camera that can really get the job done. Nightwave will help you identify a variety of things that go bump in the night, thereby making your early morning and late evening fishing trips significantly safer. Built rugged, with easy connectivity, Nightwave is a must-have addition for any boat that travels to/from the blue water in the dark or stays over in the deep for the night.

SI-TEX

Long Island-based Si-Tex has a few new products for 2025, including commercial-grade scanning sonar and gyro-stabilized marine binoculars, both offered under their Koden brand. The KDS-5500BB is a black box digital searchlight sonar that is identical to Koden’s highly successful KDS-6000BB Broadband Sonar but with one important exception. The KDS-5500BB is a single-frequency (80kHz) system designed to provide higher sensitivity and superior fish detection and tracking over longer ranges. As a result, the KDS-5500BB can provide superior performance and fish detection at ranges out to 2,200 feet in deep offshore waters, ideal for targeting and tracking schools of tuna and other fast-moving pelagic fish.

Koden’s Digital Signal Processing delivers a high-resolution presentation while reducing display noise at longer ranges. With 5, 10, 15, and 20-degree scanning sector angle steps available, operators can use the KDS-5500BB to detect and track even fast-moving schools of fish. This professional system provides four presentation views to suit different fishing applications: Sonar mode for a 360-degree sweep around the boat; Off Center mode to display more of the target information ahead of the boat; Bottom Scan mode to display reflected echoes from the water column and the seabed in a cross-section presentation; and Echo Sounder mode to display fish echoes and bottom in a traditional fishfinder presentation.

A stabilized version is also offered (KDS-5500BBS), featuring a sophisticated motion sensor to reduce image distortion caused by the pitch and roll of the vessel on high seas. For sport fishing boats with limited installation space, the KDS-5500’s transducer is available in both standard and short-stroke hoist versions. The short-stroke version requires 5 fewer inches of “head space,” allowing for easier installation on smaller commercial fishing vessels and sportfishing yachts.

The Koden Sirius 12 gyro-stabilized binoculars are compact and lightweight, yet ruggedly built binoculars are manufactured in Japan using premium quality lenses and internal electronic components. Their powerful 12X magnification and wide field of view are ideal for a variety of fishing and navigating tasks, including spotting other boats, dangerous obstacles, breaking fish, diving birds, or oncoming commercial marine traffic. Advanced Japanese lenses minimize light transmission loss, ensuring a bright and clear field of view over a range of light and weather conditions at sea. At the heart of these binoculars is a precision built-in six-axis electronic gyro sensor that delivers rock-steady vision whether you’re scanning the offshore horizon for signs of fish, birds, or bait, glassing ahead of the boat to avoid whales on your way to the fishing grounds, or scouting out a tricky harbor entrance or crowded anchorage from a distance.

The Sirius 12 is built for serious sea duty with a list of standard features that include an IPX7 waterproof rating; an easy-to-grip textured surface for sure handling with wet hands; an eyepiece and objective lenses with a water and oil-repellant coating to prevent lens contamination; easy-to-adjust eyepieces to accommodate different users; as well as a large focus adjustment wheel and On/Off switch that are easy to operate, even when wearing gloves. Sirius 12 Binoculars provide 12 hours of operation on a single AA alkaline battery, with an Automatic Power Off feature after 30 minutes to further extend battery life.

VETUS

Bow thrusters are becoming more of a standard kit for an ever-increasing number of coastal boaters. VETUS, one of the industry leaders in this category, offers a new-and-improved version of their standard bow thrusters, the BOW PRO Thruster series. There are a total of 25 different 12- to 48-volt bow thrusters currently in the BOW PRO family, which will support boats from 18 to 130 feet. The Fisherman actually outfitted its 25’ Steiger Craft project boat with the Vetus BOWPRO421 which integrated Yamaha’s Helm Master EX joystick, which in turn integrated with Yamaha’s new 350 outboard with electronic steering. The result for our single engine boat was nothing short of amazing, providing significantly enhanced maneuverability at the dock in just about any weather condition for our pilot house boat. It’s an accessory that we can say with confidence and experience gives the pilot the highest level of control possible.

We’ll take a closer look at the four smallest members of the BOW PRO family, but first, let’s understand what a bow thruster can do to make both your fishing and docking experiences a lot easier.

Of course the combination of a bow thruster working in conjunction with an outboard motor provides great control, but bow thrusters working on their own get the job done as well. The one problem that the VETUS BOW PRO thrusters solve from the get-go is that they give operators fingertip control of the lateral movement of the vessel’s bow on demand. When you are enjoying a day on the water, your focus should be living in that moment and not dreading the return trip back to a crowded marina and docking your boat while buffeted by an angry afternoon sea breeze. With a BOW PRO on board, you can mitigate the worry and be confident in your docking skills. A VETUS thruster gives you sideways control of your boat so you can precisely control the bow of your boat, even in less-than-ideal conditions. They work by rotating a propeller in a submerged tunnel mounted athwartships to the keel, which is located below the waterline near the bow. A control panel allows you to push the bow sideways to resist the force of a crosswind or cross-current when you are maneuvering in close quarters.

Bow thrusters are not just for docking. Having total control of your boat is important in any tight situation or when handling your boat in the fleet with a big tuna on the line. Perhaps the best part of a BOW PRO thruster is the maintenance-free, brushless induction motor. Less maintenance means less hassle and more carefree time out on the water.

But not all thrusters are equal. Traditional thrusters typically offer two modes: on and off. VETUS BOW PRO thrusters offer full proportional control. This means you get to decide how much thrust you need, a little or a lot. With VETUS’s innovative DC-to-DC charging technology, you can be confident that your thruster will always be ready to use as much as you need without fear of overuse or overheating issues. The four VETUS BOW PRO 12-volt thrusters that most Fisherman readers can relate to are the BOWA 0301 for boats up to 24 feet in length, which generates 30kgf of thrust from a single dedicated 12-volt battery via a 110mm diameter tunnel; the BOWA 0361 for boats from 20 to 30 feet in length that produces 36kgf of thrust from a 125mm tunnel; the BOWA 0401 for boats from 23 to 36 feet that generates 65kgf from a 185mm tunnel; and the BOWA 0761 that is designed for boats from 30 to 45 feet, producing 76kgf of thrust via a 185mm tunnel.
