April 11: Opening Day Of Trout Season In RI & CT

Rhode Island continues to uphold the time-honored tradition of a formal Opening Day, remaining the last state in southern New England to maintain this classic spring milestone. For those who have been chomping at the bit to get back to their favorite stocked ponds, the wait is nearly over. According to the DEM, the state stocks 85 bodies of water across the Ocean State, distributed to ensure plenty of opportunity for everyone.

This Saturday, April 11, at 6 a.m., the banks will be lined with anglers who have been counting down the days. Before you make that first cast, ensure you have your 2026 freshwater fishing license in hand. The daily limit remains five trout per angler with a minimum size of 8 inches. Be sure to consult the DEM website to identify specific areas designated for fly fishing only or those reserved exclusively for children under 14.

For Connecticut anglers, the Nutmeg State has transitioned away from a traditional closed season, opting instead for a “catch and release only” period that runs from March 1 through the second Saturday in April. This year, that transition to harvest officially occurs at 6 a.m. on April 11, 2026. This management shift has proven to be a major success, with local tackle shops reporting a significant spike in sales and a noticeable increase in angler participation statewide.

DEEP manages an impressive 575 stocked bodies of water, including 18 locations that receive Seeforellen brown trout. Starting this Saturday morning, anglers can begin harvesting fish from most of these state-stocked waters. However, several lakes and rivers carry special regulations, so a quick double-check of the DEEP website is recommended to confirm the rules for your chosen destination. While most Connecticut waters allow a five-fish bag limit for trout, (minimum size 9 inches) various special length requirements apply may depending on the location.

We want to see how you fare on the water this weekend—especially if you’re getting the kids or grandkids involved in the sport. Please send your high-resolution photos to danderson@thefisherman.com. Your catches could be featured in our reader galleries or highlighted in our weekly Fishing Forecast videos on YouTube. Get out there, stay safe, and have a blast!

Opening Day Essentials

Before you head out at 6 a.m. this Saturday, April 11, make sure you have these essentials squared away…

  1. Licensing & Paperwork
  • 2026 Freshwater License: Ensure your RI or CT license is renewed. Both states offer easy online renewals via their respective DEM and DEEP portals.
  • Trout Stamp: In Rhode Island, a trout conservation stamp is required for all anglers catching or possessing trout. In Connecticut, verify if your specific water body requires the Trout & Salmon Stamp.
  1. Gear & Tackle
  • Light Action Setup: A 6-foot light or ultra-light spinning rod with 4- to 6-pound test monofilament is the gold standard for stocked trout.
  • Live & Prepared Baits: Stock up on Berkley PowerBait (Fluorescent Orange and Chartreuse are local favorites), worms/nightcrawlers, shiners and small mealworms.
  • Hardware: If you want to keep it classic, pack a selection of 1/8-ounce Phoebe spoons, Kastmasters, Rooster Tails and maybe an old school Daredevil. Or go more contemporary and bring your 90-size jerkbaits, Ned Rigs, Trout Tricks and Trout Magnets.
  • Measuring Tape & Stringer: If you plan to harvest, keep your 8-inch minimum (RI) in mind and have a way to keep your limit of five fish fresh.
  • Camera/Phone: Don’t forget to snap those photos for the Fisherman Magazine galleries!
