Barnegat Light Reef Gets 60 Tons Of Material

Following earlier deployments this year at Little Egg and Manasquan reef sites, the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife (Division) and its Bureau of Marine Fisheries staff expanded the State’s artificial reef network with deployments on the Barnegat Light Reef site.

With the help of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and its Aids to Navigation, the Reef Program was able to deploy an estimated 400 gravestones and mixed concrete rubble back in May, weighing approximately 60 tons in total on the Barnegat Light Reef site.

The material was donated to the NJ Artificial Reef Program by Schick Monuments of Millville and South Jersey Monuments of Vineland.  This latest series of deployments at Barnegat Light Reef is now resting at 39° 45.32 / 074° 01.60

According to the Division, artificial reefs are typically made up of concrete, steel, decommissioned metal ships and barges and provide habitat for a variety of marine life, fishing grounds for anglers and underwater structures for scuba divers to enjoy.  For anglers heading out of Barnegat Inlet, the new gravestones should make killer structure for knocking dead a few doormats this month!
