Bass Pro Shops Buys Yet Another Competitor

Four years after Bass Pro Shops announced plans to acquire its top rival, Cabela’s, the Springfield, Missouri-based company reached an agreement in principal to purchase another competitor. This time, Sportsman’s Warehouse comes under the banner of Johnny Morris and company.

According to a late 2020 press release, Great American Outdoors Group (the parent company of Bass Pro Shops), will acquire the Utah-based big box retailer for $18 per share in a deal valued at around $800 million. The merger has already been unanimously approved by the Sportsman’s Warehouse Board of Directors.

Sportsman’s Warehouse operates 112 stores nationwide including in Pennsylvania at Camp Hill and Chambersburg. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s operate 169 stores.

“We are excited to be joining the Great American Outdoors Group,” said Sportsman’s Warehouse CEO Jon Barker who said the merger brings together two of the greatest brands in the outdoor industry. “As we look to the future, the combined entities provide our passionate associates with greater opportunities to serve the outdoor enthusiast,” Barker said, adding “We look forward to a smooth transition and building our partnership.”

“Today is a happy day for our companies, outdoor enthusiasts and for the cause of conservation,” said Bass Pro Shops Founder and Great American Outdoors Group Leader, Johnny Morris, adding “As outdoor sports specialists with unwavering dedication to people who fish, hunt and enjoy the outdoors, we greatly admire the passionate team at Sportsman’s Warehouse for their commitment to their customers and the sports we all love.”

“By combining our best practices, our aim is to give our customers a best-of-the-best experience while further uniting them to support conservation,” added Morris.
