On August 22, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) published a Call for Information and Nominations for a second offshore wind sale in the Central Atlantic. The Call initiated a 60-day public comment period that ends on October 21, 2024. During the 60-day public comment period, BOEM will host its Central Atlantic Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force meeting and additional public meetings.
BOEM is hosting in-person “open house” style meetings that will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about BOEM’s Central Atlantic planning process through interactive stations and individualized discussions with BOEM staff. BOEM was established in 2010 by then Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar with the purpose of reassigning responsibilities previously conducted by the Minerals Management Service into new management structures aimed at improving management, oversight and accountability of activities in the Outer Continental Shelf. According to the actual secretarial order, BOEM was established to “ensure a fair return to the taxpayer from royalty and revenue disbursement activities and provide independent safety and environmental oversight and enforcement of offshore activities.”
