Comment Period Extended For Atlantic Shark Rule - The Fisherman

Comment Period Extended For Atlantic Shark Rule

Federal fisheries managers have extended the public comment period for proposed revisions to commercial Atlantic blacknose shark and recreational Atlantic shark fisheries. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and NOAA Fisheries announced that comments on the proposed rule will now be accepted through May 29, 2026, providing additional time for stakeholders to review and respond to the changes.

The proposed rule includes several potential management adjustments, including removing the Atlantic blacknose shark management boundary, modifying commercial retention limits, and eliminating certain quota linkages within commercial shark fisheries. Recreational measures under consideration include revised minimum size limits and updated retention limits for Atlantic sharks. The rule would affect commercial and recreational shark fishermen throughout the northwestern Atlantic, including the Gulf of America and Caribbean Sea, as well as dealers who buy or sell sharks or shark products in those regions.
