DEC, New York Sea Grant Announce $85k In Marine Project Funding

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in partnership with New York Sea Grant, has announced $85,000 in small grant funding to support marine and coastal projects across New York’s Marine and Coastal District (MCD).

The funding will back initiatives focused on conservation, education, research, and increasing participation in marine recreational fishing, with an emphasis on protecting and promoting the state’s marine and estuarine resources.

Projects eligible for funding include youth fishing programs, shoreline cleanups, habitat restoration efforts, citizen science initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and tools to improve access to coastal resources. Grants will range from $1,000 to $15,000 and must be completed within 12 months.

The program is funded entirely through the MCD Environmental Custom License Plate initiative, with a portion of each plate purchase supporting marine conservation efforts statewide.

Applications are due by May 19, 2026. An applicant guidance webinar is scheduled for April 21 at 1 p.m. for those interested in applying.

Officials say the program continues to build on past success, including projects like ADA-accessible fishing stations and community-driven coastal improvements, while helping expand opportunities for anglers and coastal communities alike.
