Jersey Shore Beach Replenishment - The Fisherman

Jersey Shore Beach Replenishment

Surfcasters have probably already noticed, but beach replenishment efforts are well underway up and down the Jersey Shore.

Efforts involving the Army Corps got underway along the North Wildwood beaches this past June, while other municipalities are expected to receive loads of new beach sand dredged from just offshore throughout the fall.

According to published reports, 1,278,000 cubic yards of sand dredged from the ocean are expected to be deployed along the Atlantic City Northend Beach and onto the Ventnor Beaches this month at a cost of roughly $38 million. Also receiving approximately 1,750,000 cubic yards this fall are the beaches of Long Beach Island to the tune of $54 million.

Toms River’s Ortley Beach section is slated to receive 426,000 cubic yards of sand during ongoing replenishment efforts, with the shoreline expected to be redesigned in an effort to help prevent the constant wave scouring.  Published reports peg that cost to Toms River at $1.3 million to shore up beaches in Ortley over the last several years since the Army Corps finished their last beach replenishment project in northern Ocean County in 2019.

Toms River beaches are expected to get 135,000 cubic yards of sand, while Mantoloking is expected to receive 392,000 cubic yards, Brick, 227,000; Seaside Heights, 219,000; Lavallette, 184,000; and Seaside Park, 27,000, which is expected to taper in from Seaside Heights.

In northern Ocean County, Bay Head and Point Pleasant Beach are both slated to receive 495,000 cubic yards of sand, most of which will be deployed in Bay Head, with a smaller amount tapering into southern Point Pleasant Beach.
