As summer water temperatures climb, the stress placed on released fish increases, making proper handling more important than ever. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding anglers that minimizing handling time can significantly improve the survival of released fish, particularly striped bass and other popular saltwater species.
DEC recommends keeping fish in the water whenever possible while removing the hook. If a fish must be lifted from the water for a quick measurement or photograph, anglers should have everything ready beforehand and return the fish immediately. Wetting your hands before handling a fish helps preserve its protective slime coating, while avoiding contact with the gills and eyes reduces the risk of injury. Fish should also be supported horizontally rather than held vertically by the jaw, which can damage internal organs and jaw structure.
Using appropriate tackle that’s capable of landing a fish quickly, along with dehooking tools and rubber-coated landing nets, can further reduce stress and improve survival. If a fish is deeply hooked, DEC advises cutting the line close to the hook instead of attempting to remove it, as excessive handling often causes more harm than leaving the hook in place. With warm summer water already placing additional strain on released fish, a quick, careful release can help ensure they survive to fight another day.
