With shark fishing in full swing, New York anglers are reminded to review the state’s recreational shark fishing regulations before heading offshore or casting from the beach. When targeting sharks with bait, non-stainless, non-offset circle hooks are required, and anglers must have wire or bolt cutters readily available to safely remove tackle and release fish. Sharks that are not being harvested must remain in the water at all times with their gills submerged and be released without unnecessary harm. Shore anglers should also note that baited hooks must be deployed only by casting with rod and reel, metal leaders may not exceed 18 inches, and chumming from shore is limited to mollusks or crustaceans only. Anglers are also reminded that all prohibited shark species must be released immediately, harvested sharks must comply with size and possession limits, and shark finning or the sale of sharks or shark parts taken recreationally is prohibited.
