On October 2, the Long Island fishing community lost Capt. Scott Leonard, when he lost his battle with cancer. Scott was a great captain, and an incredible human being, but most of all a great father to his son Jordan.
Scott grew up on Long Island, cutting his teeth in Great South Bay and the Babylon region. A hard-nosed surf rat in his earlier days, Scott was known as the guy who always found fish. As time wore on, Scott made major moves to enhance his career. One of the first was taking ownership of Augies Bait and Tackle, a staple in Babylon for years. Scott custom built rods and repaired reels, and ran a top-notch shop, catering to surf, inshore and offshore anglers. After Augies, Scott moved to Star Island for several years and ran Star Island Yacht Club in its entirety. Scott was a well-rounded angler who knew what it would take to catch a wide variety of species.
Over the years, Scott also became known as one of the top captains in striped bass tournaments. He always seemed to be on top, or close behind the leaders. He won at least 50 tournaments over the years. His love for bass helped guide him to “Top Gun Sportfish Charters.” His business boomed in Montauk and Fire Island and clients had numerous outings with bass over 50 pounds to their credit, thanks to Scott’s tutelage.
Scott will be sorely missed by all that knew and respected him. He leaves behind a young son, Jordan, who was by his side for many trips, and on the ice learning to play hockey – just like Scott.
Rest in Peace Capt. Scott
