Matt is the latest addition to The Fisherman staff and has assumed the position of managing editor for the Long Island Edition. Fishing has been a large part of his life as far back as age 5 and his passion for the sport continues to burn strong as ever. Fishing an average of five days or nights a week has been the norm for much of Matt’s adult life. While surf fishing and striped bass rank number one on his list of favorite types of fishing, he also spends considerable time chasing blackfish, porgies, triggerfish, fluke, albies and pretty much anything that swims in the salt. His surf fishing skills were clearly apparent during the 2019 season when he swept the top spot in striped bass, bluefish and total points in the highly competitive New York Surf Fishing Contest.

He is also very adept at the freshwater game and you are just as likely to find him wielding a fly rod on the Connetquot River as perched atop a wave washed boulder in a wetsuit on Montauk’s south side. When the salt quiets down, any winter day might find him prowling the tidal reaches of the Carmans and Connetquot rivers for white perch or winter over stripers in his kayak.

Working with Matt for the past month, it is evident that he has a wealth of new ideas for new and refreshing content he is looking forward to sharing with Fisherman readers. He is a very accomplished rod builder with a strong following developed over the course of the past six years while employed at J&J Sports Center in Patchogue, NY. He has also served as a consultant to St. Croix on the development of several popular rod designs and will be sharing his rod building talents over the course of the winter with how-to features and videos.

Many of you may already be familiar with Matt from his presentations at numerous fishing shows, including The Fisherman’s Surf and Inshore Show and Workshop held every September at the Huntington Hilton, and through several of his recently published feature articles. Unfortunately, due to the many issues related to the coronavirus, most fishing shows and related events have been cancelled through the rest of this year. Hopefully, the new year will bring a return to some of these events, and with them, the opportunity to meet this engaging and knowledgeable young man.
