On December 7, 2022, New Jersey’s Division of Fish & Wildlife officially recognized Matthew Florio’s October 22 longfin tuna catch as a state record for that species. Florio’s new record albacore tuna, which appeared on the Report Cover of our December, 2022 edition of The Fisherman – weighed in at 78.15 pounds at Hoffman’s Marina in Brielle, breaking the previous record for longfin which had been caught in 1984 by 3.4 ounces.
Florio was chunking off the boat Luna Sea at the east elbow of Hudson Canyon when he reeled in the fish; he was using a Kevin Bogan 30 stand up rod and PENN 30 reel with 60-pound monofilament when he landed the fish. A butter fish served as the bait.
