NYCRF Willie Young Memorial Scholarship - The Fisherman

NYCRF Willie Young Memorial Scholarship

New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing is pleased to announce the creation of the NYCRF Willie Young Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship honors Willie Young, the founder and long-time president of the NYCRF. Willie was a titan of the recreational community and one of New York’s leading advocates for fishing access and the protection of marine resources.

A prolific fisherman in his own right, Willie held leadership roles in many organizations beyond our own, including the Montauk Surfcasters Association, where he served as founder and president, the High Hill Striper Club and the Coastal Conservation Association of New York. He also served as a fishing adviser to County and State Advisory Boards.

Assisting others in the conservation and preservation of our marine resources and promoting “good stewards” are the main goals of the scholarship committee. Finalists will be chosen with one award recipient selected each year.

The scholarship committee are particularly interested in having its scholarship recipients begin and remain in careers in fields related to the conservation and preservation of our marine resources and recreational fishing.

Scholarship applicants must be a relative of a member of the NYCRF or be enrolled or planning to enroll in a marine science or marine biology program at a four-year college or university. Applications are due postmarked no later than September 15, 2020.
