After a few winters that kept hardwater anglers guessing, this season has finally delivered the kind of prolonged cold that ice fishermen wait for. Consistent low temperatures have locked up ponds, lakes, and backwater stretches across the region, creating safe, fishable ice and — more importantly — extended opportunities to get out there. From largemouth and pickerel to slab crappie and jumbo perch, anglers have been capitalizing on the longer window, dialing in patterns and putting in more time than we’ve seen in recent years. Here’s a look at some of the smiles, slabs, and solid bucketmouths that have come topside during this old-fashioned winter.

Raul Andres put in the time on the hardwater upstate and was rewarded with this quality largemouth bass, iced during a productive midwinter outing. Proof that even in the coldest stretch of the season, bucketmouths are still willing to chew beneath a solid lid of ice.

Eric Trovitch found steady action on the Long Island ice, tempting several solid largemouth bass with tungsten jigs tipped with earthworms. Downsizing the presentation and keeping it subtle made all the difference during this chilly session.

Matt Malenovsky, of Sayville, shows off a healthy upstate largemouth bass that fell for a lively shiner suspended beneath the ice. When the bite gets finicky, a well-placed live bait offering can turn a quiet afternoon into a memorable one.

Lee Goodman dialed in a central Long Island crappie bite using tear drop jigs sweetened with mealworms. Fishing light and staying patient paid off with a steady pick of slabs on a local lake this winter.
