Porgy & Tautog Back In Play For August In New Jersey

As of August 1, New Jersey anglers will get another couple of fish to play with.

Blackfish, or tautog, reopens as of August 1 with a one fish bag limit and 15-inch minimum size.  That limited possession limit will continue through November 15, when the bag limit increases to five fish as of November 16.

As for porgy, aka scup, after being closed for several months on orders from NOAA Fisheries, New Jersey anglers will once again have access to a 30-fish bag limit and 10-inch minimum size limit through the end of 2023.

Delaware’s tautog limit is four fish at 16 inches from July 1 through December 31, while for porgies – a lesser available species the farther south you go – a 40 fish bag limit and 9-inch size remains in place in Delaware all year.

Delaware anglers are also reminded that the ‘summer slot’ on striped bass in the Delaware Bay, river and its tributaries remains in place through August 31, with a one fish from 20- to 25-inch size.  The coastal regulation however is still one fish from 28 to 31 inches.
