The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has announced that the 2026 fishing season at Quabbin Reservoir will officially commence on Saturday, April 18. Renowned as one of the premier cold-water fisheries in the Northeast, the reservoir offers anglers world-class opportunities for lake trout, landlocked salmon, and smallmouth bass.
The boating season for 2026 will run through October 17. During this window, three designated boat launch areas (Gate 8 in Belchertown, Gate 31 in New Salem, and Gate 43 in Hardwick) will provide access to the water. For those who prefer to fish from the shore, bank fishing remains open at designated gates through December 31, providing a lengthy season for dedicated anglers.
To protect the purity of this vital drinking water supply, the DCR maintains strict boat decontamination protocols. All private motorized boats must have an intact Quabbin Boat Seal to launch. Anglers without a seal can have their vessel approved through the Boat Decontamination program by appointment. Furthermore, the use of lead fishing sinkers and jigs weighing less than one ounce is strictly prohibited to protect the reservoir’s loon and eagle populations.
Boat launch areas are scheduled to open at 6 a.m. daily, with closing times adjusted seasonally. Anglers are encouraged to review the 2026 Quabbin Fishing Guide for specific information on horsepower limits, aquatic invasive species prevention, and permit fees.
