Reminder Issued For Tautog Anglers On Crab Bait Regulations

With tautog season approaching, New York anglers are being reminded to follow current regulations regarding the use of crab baits, particularly when it comes to green crabs and Asian shore crabs.

Green crabs remain legal to purchase from local bait shops and can be freely used for blackfish. However, stricter rules apply to Asian shore crabs. Anglers are prohibited from buying, selling, transporting, or distributing Asian shore crabs. These crabs may only be used as bait in the same area where they are collected.

Additionally, anglers should be aware of harvest limits. A commercial crab permit is required to possess more than 50 crabs in a single day. This applies to both green crabs and Asian shore crabs.

Another key regulation requires that all crabs used for bait must be cut or killed prior to use. Releasing live crabs—regardless of species—is not permitted, helping to prevent the spread of invasive species and protect local ecosystems.

Anglers are encouraged to review New York’s recreational bait crab limits and guidelines before heading out, ensuring compliance while gearing up for the spring tautog bite.
