Rutgers Webinar On June 28th To Focus On Effects Of Sand Mining

The next seminar as a part of our Marine Extension Program Seminar Series (MEPSS) through Rutgers Cooperative Extension will be held on Monday, June 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will feature Dr. Thomas “Motz” Grothues (Associate Research Professor) from Rutgers University’s Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences.

Dr. Grothues will deliver a presentation entitled Ecology and Fisheries Use of Sand Features Off New Jersey and New York. For those captains and anglers at the Jersey Shore in particular who have experienced the effects of sand mining operations along inshore lumps to build up local beaches, this presentation may be of major interest.

“We extracted patterns of sand habitat use as well as recreational and commercial fisher use of sand features from nearly 700 science and government reports and also analyzed a decade of federal and state trawl surveys for patterns of habitat association to make predications of the level and mechanics of disturbance that dredging would bring as well as to identify knowledge gaps,” the posted event flyer said, adding “Interestingly, pelagic fishes and their fisheries are among the most closely associated with shoals.”

Please register by June 25 by completing the registration form at http://go.rutgers.edu/eatjnrfn.  For questions about the June 28th webinar or other events presented by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, contact Kelly Jurgensen (kjurgensen@co.ocean.nj.us) or Douglas Zemeckis (zemeckis@njaes.rutgers.edu).
