The Fred Rung Memorial Striped Bass Derby On April 1

The Hudson River Fishermen’s Association (HRFA) is hosting their annual “catch, tag, then photo and release” striper tournament, named in honor of the late Fred Rung, from April 1 through May 18.

The Fred Rung Memorial Striped Bass Derby offers a catch, tag and release format with funds helping support the scientific study and conservation of striped bass (Gray FishTag Research, Berkeley Striper Club’s Fisheries Defense Fund, Monmouth University’s Stripers for the Future, the American Littoral Society tagging, and Save A Million Bass program of the Hudson River Riverkeeper).  While cash prizes to winners are guaranteed the dollar amount to research will depend upon the level of participation in the derby.

The event kicks off at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1 and will run through 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 18.  This is strictly a no-kill derby for striped bass, and no other species are eligible.  Stripers must come from the legal waters of the Hudson River, between the Troy Dam and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, which includes any tributaries feeding into the Hudson. No Raritan Bay or ocean caught entries allowed. The Derby is open to both boat and shore anglers.
