For the inland Massachusetts angler, spring doesn’t really start until the first Saturday in April when they can make their first casts at “The Chu.” The 2026 fishing season at the Wachusett Reservoir is set to begin on Saturday, April 4, at sunrise. Offering access to some of the best shore-only freshwater fishing in the Northeast, with lake trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, landlocked salmon and many other species in residence.
Wachusett is not your average pond. This 6,380-acre expanse of pristine drinking water is held in high regard by anglers, earned through decades of producing trophy-class salmonids and some of the most consistent shore-bound action in the region. “There is just something special about Wachusett,” says Fisherman Magazine editor Dave Anderson, “maybe it’s because I grew up fishing there, but there is a real opportunity for a seriously large fish when you’re fishing this place. Lake trout exceeding 20 pounds have been landed here and there are giant largemouth and smallmouth bass, too. No matter how many years pass between trips, I’ll always have a soft spot for ‘The Chu!’”
April is one of the favorite months of local anglers and offers some of the best lake trout fishing of the entire year. Whether you want to fish shiners on the bottom, or if you’d prefer to take the mobile approach and ‘snap jig’ Kastmasters down deep, you’d be wise to set aside time for a trip this month.
2026 Regulations
Anglers must hold a valid 2026 Massachusetts Freshwater Fishing License and follow the rules posted below:
- Lake Trout: The crown jewel of the Reservoir. Anglers may harvest three fish per day with a no minimum size.
- Landlocked Salmon: These acrobatic fighters have a 15-inch minimum size and a daily limit of two fish per angler, per day.
- Stocked Trout: For those chasing the freshly-stocked, rainbow and brown trout released by the state, follow the general statewide regulations of a three-fish daily limit and no minimum length, though Wachusett regularly gives up holdovers that often far exceed typical hatchery sizes.
- General Rules: Fishing is permitted from sunrise to sunset only. Access is restricted to designated gates, and all forms of wading or entering the water are strictly prohibited to protect the water supply.
Whether you’re shooting for a new personal best laker or simply looking to reconnect with the rugged beauty of The Chu’s lengthy shoreline, the 2026 season at Wachusett just might give you both.
