BUSY JULY FOR LONG ISLAND ANGLERS

If you enjoy fluke fishing, and you like to mix a little competition in with your fishing, the next couple of weeks will provide plenty of opportunities to do both. Among the planned events for the remainder of the month are four tournaments specifically targeting the summer flatties, and another that includes fluke.

First on tap is the Montauk Mercury Grand Slam Charity Tournament based out of Uihleins Marina this Saturday and Sunday. Fishing legend Frank Tuma Sr. will be honored at the event which is being hosted by the Kiwanis Club of East Hampton and Montauk Friends of Erin. A captains’ meeting and registration takes place at the marina at 5 p.m. this Friday, July 14. The entry fee is $350 per boat with optional Calcuttas of $100 per species. The following weekend features a pair of fluke contests. The Grandpa Savino Memorial Fluke Tournament presented by the Staten Island Tuna Club takes place on Saturday the 22nd. That same weekend, the Midsummer Fluke Smackdown hosted by Jones Beach Fishing Station runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday with cash or tackle prizes for the top three fluke. Surfcasters can look forward to the Surfratsball.com Shindig on Saturday, July 22nd at 9 a.m. at Tight Lines Bait and Tackle in Sag Harbor. There is always plenty of great food, you can chat with some of the region’s best surf fishermen, and there will be over $10,000 in fishing related prizes to be raffled off for "MORE" to help kids with cancer. The 16th Annual Moriches Anglers Fluke Tournament is being held on Saturday, July 29th. The entry fee of $50 and applications are available at B&B Tackle, Harts Cove Bait &Tackle, Silly Lilly Fishing Station, Smith Point Bait & Tackle, and Uncle Charlies Bait and Tackle. The 10th Annual K of C Fluke Rodeo, based out of Marine Max in Lindenhurst will take place on Sunday, July 30. Boundaries are from Debs Inlet to Shinnecock Inlet, with fishing from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. An awards barbecue/fundraiser for Special Olympics and Send A Kid Fishing with Chinese auction and raffle follows from 4 to 6 p.m. The entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for kids 15 years and under. Barbecue only is $10. The first 200 attendees at the awards barbecue receive a T-shirt and goodie bag of tackle. You can fish from private, party, charter or rental boats, piers, docks or beaches.
